First Grade Reading
We will do a lot of reading this year! We will be working on foundational skills, reading and comprehending literature and informational texts, and building our vocabularies.
Word Wall words
To the left is a picture of the high-frequency words that students will be expected to know by the end of first grade. Learning these words will help your child become a better reader! Here are some games to play and practice these words at home:

Word Hunt! Write some words on index cards and hide them around a room. Tell your child which word they need to hunt for!

Sight Word Bingo! Make a grid of some sight words for the list. Call out words have your child cover the words as they are called.

Sight Word Toss! Write words on index cards and scatter the words on the floor. Have your child throw a bean bag or stuffed animal onto the words and read the word it lands on.

Word Swat! Write sight words on a large piece of paper. and use a fly swatter or ruler to have your child swat different words on the paper. Race your child to read the word correctly first!
